TUMPEK WAYANG

Saturday, Feb 6th 2010 , according to Balinese calendar is Tumpek wayang day or also know as tumpek ringgit. Some areas of Bali celebrate the day to make offerings for musical instruments, dance equipments and for the shadow puppets, wayang kulit, particularly. There are many families have inherited puppets from their ancestr namely a dalang or puppeteer.

            All puppeteer have set their puppets by storing them in a wooden cueved box, in this day all puppets will be taken out of the box and placed in a position just as if they are being performed in an actual performance. The puppeteer will remove all his puppets from storage and set them all to receive the offerings. The traditional ceremony is aimed to worship the almighty God for his blessings and to keep the genuine soul of the puppet performances or taksu.

            There is a tradisional belief that a baby born on this day woud have a stuff character. Therefore, a special ceremony has to be ferformed in order to purify the child and to protect from harms. The ceremony will be held water or tumpek wayang’s ritual and by  performing puppet show to complete it.
